Action & Emptiness
4-Day Contact Improvisation Workshop with Francisco Borges
๐จ๐๐๐๐๐ & ๐ฌ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ is an on-going embodied study developed by Francisco Borges and Reimar Wen Shen on how bodies meet and engage in co-creative and collaborative action within the empty-full framework of Contact Improvisation.
The material is strongly inspired and rooted in 1) Firstly, we are inspired by the fantastic "๐๐ซ๐ ๐๐ง๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ" concept and inner experience from Steve Paxton: "๐โ๐ ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ก๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ก๐๐๐ก ๐๐๐๐๐๐ฃ๐๐ ๐๐ก๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐ข๐ ๐ ๐กโ๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐ 3๐๐ ๐๐๐ก๐๐ก๐ฆ ๐กโ๐๐ก ๐๐๐๐ ๐๐ ๐๐ ๐กโ๐๐ ๐ ๐ก๐๐ก๐. ๐ผ๐ก ๐๐๐๐ ๐โ๐ก ๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐ ๐ , ๐๐ก ๐๐ ๐กโ๐ ๐ก๐ค๐ ๐๐ ๐ฆ๐๐ข ๐คโ๐ ๐๐๐ ๐ก๐๐๐๐กโ๐๐ ๐๐๐๐๐๐๐." 2) Secondly, the ๐๐ข๐ง-๐๐๐ง๐ symbol and language inform the individual body-mind and the relational field of it's hidden dynamics and embodied potential. 3) Thirdly, ๐๐๐ง, ๐๐ณ๐จ๐ ๐๐ก๐๐ง ๐๐ง๐ ๐๐ข๐ฉ๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ง๐ offer a road to emptiness, direct knowing and clear seeing. 4) Fourth and final root-pilar is ๐๐ข๐ค๐ข๐๐จ, also known as the (Martial) Art of Peace or the Way of Harmony, working with centering, ki-projection and transmutation. These four are the ground which informs the work. Each workshop and laboratory is composed and improvised on the spot, fruit of being in converstation with the real moment, with the real bodies. Stagnation is death. Life is movement. If these words move something in your body, don't hesitate and join us for 4 mornings of embodied practice and research, this time with the Francisco Borges and the shadow of Reimar Wen Shen. __________________ ๐๐๐ Francisco "Fran" Borges [PT] Born in the Azores islands, Francisco is a researcher of embodied attention, relational intelligence, movement and the beautiful strangeness of life. BODY that CAN - study of attention and action
In-depth research Residency with
The program consists of 3 parts, each lasting 6 days.
In each part, 3 days will be dedicated to studying with Ekaterina, followed by 3 days of an open laboratory where participants can freely explore and research the proposed material within the same group.
The third and final part will be open only to those who have attended one of the previous parts. However, if there are available slots, it may be possible for those who have studied with Ekaterina before. I am glad that contact improvisation can still be a living exploration. That we can continue to pose questions within this practice, propose and test different hypotheses, make discoveries - and thus develop both the practice and ourselves in it. What if we look not just at what has been and what is, but also glimpse what it could become? What else can contact improvisation be? Iโm interested in exploring this direction: - Contact as coherence, wholeness, and consistency in the entire system engaged in action. - Improvisation as the ability to create and manage forms, flows of forces, space, and time. How do we reach that place of consciousness and body where forms arise? How do we become that source? From the infinite possibilities, what do I want to be manifested right now? What do I choose to embody, support, and sustain? Is there free will, or is everything predetermined? What is freedom? Is it chaos? Flow? Choice? Agency? And what to do with the accumulated baggage of patterns, ideas, and beliefs when they do not serve well our new tasks and challenges at hand? In the first part, weโll devote ample time to fine-tuning the body/mind system in solo and in simple forms of contact (touch). How do we โglueโ the mind to the body? What does it mean to be in one placeโฆ one timeโฆ one action? How do I create here/there, this/other, me/not me? How soon do I notice changes when one thing becomes another? How can I stay at the source, the very beginning of change, without missing the moment when unified action is possible-before everything splits apart? What form, place, strength, and stability of attention are suitable for this? Weโll begin to revisit our experience related to the concepts of weight, center, boundary, stillness, and movement in space. From there, the material will evolve from one part to the next towards more active movement and interaction. The exact shape of this process will depend on the group, on participantsโ current interests, goals, and capabilities. I welcome everyone who is ready to dive into this experience. Not an experience of searching for themselves or for the dance, but an experience of creation of both. Changes may not come immediately, but we will plant seeds that can eventually sprout.

Falling like a Fish Swimming in the Sky
Contact Improvisation with Yuval Finkelshtein
In this workshop we will delve into the Contact Improvisation practice, exploring different approaches for flying in the dance, into the floor, in the air, in our fluid water container which is our body.
In order to fly, first we need to fall. But who and what is the one that falls ? and what are the directions we can actually fall to? Making the backspace accessible and open, discovering the horizontal momentum we can create in the dance, finding the support and ground we have in every point of contact with the floor/partners like fishes being carried by water. We will explore the use our spines - the back spine, and also the frontal spine (the soft tissues and organs from mouth to enos) as a leader, embody and dive to the somatic experience of our body before we were 2 legs walking mammals, when we were slithering in the water, all to discover new ways of learning from the biggest teacher that we have - gravity. Finding new physical and metaphysical ways of curving and spiralling, which will help us ride the momentum of gravity in solo dance and with partners, and connect to the infinite directions every movement can go, if we will just listen to it carefully and softly. Discovering new engines of movement to spiral up, down and over from the soft tissues.

From the Ground Up
A Contact Improvisation Journey Through the Energy Centers with Alicia Grayson
Each session of the workshop we will focus on one of the 7 major energy centers as a lens through which we build solo and partnering skills that support contact improvisation.
The following themes gleaned from the 7 major energy centers will weave their way into the workshop: ๐๐ฎ๐ฟ๐๐ต (๐ณ๐ฒ๐ฒ๐/๐น๐ฒ๐ด๐/๐ฝ๐ฒ๐น๐๐ถ๐ฐ ๐ณ๐น๐ผ๐ผ๐ฟ) Creating and deepening a felt sense of connection and safety with the earth through yielding, grounding and rebounding. Continuously sensing the ground through own and partner's body and integrating feet, legs and pelvic floor to the rest of the body. ๐ช๐ฎ๐๐ฒ๐ฟ (๐ฝ๐ฒ๐น๐๐ถ๐) Connecting with the primary element in our bodies, water, to re-member our intrinsic flow. Accessing the power and fluidity of the pelvis and integrating it with the rest of the body. Using momentum to create more ease in dancing and intentionally going off balance to create opportunities for the joy of falling and flying. ๐๐ถ๐ฟ๐ฒ (๐๐ผ๐น๐ฎ๐ฟ ๐ฝ๐น๐ฒ๐ ๐๐) Moving from our own center and connecting to partnerโs. Delighting in and deepening one's solo dance while dancing with partner(s). Exploring the organs of liver, stomach and kidneys as support for empowered dancing. ๐๐ถ๐ฟ (๐น๐๐ป๐ด๐, ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐บ๐, ๐ต๐ฒ๐ฎ๐ฟ๐) Expanding the awareness of the lungs and breath as well as the arms and hands and their relationship to the heart. Developing strategies for creating lightness in the body and allowing the spectrum of heart qualities to dance us. ๐ฆ๐ผ๐๐ป๐ฑ & ๐ฉ๐ถ๐ฏ๐ฟ๐ฎ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป (๐บ๐ผ๐๐๐ต, ๐ท๐ฎ๐, ๐ป๐ฒ๐ฐ๐ธ) Freeing up the neck, throat and jaw and allowing sound as a means to open self expression while we move. Integrating the head and torso though the pathway of the digestive tube and refining the ability to work with spherical space and inversions. ๐๐ถ๐ด๐ต๐ & ๐ฃ๐ฒ๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ฒ๐ฝ๐๐ถ๐ผ๐ป (๐ฒ๐๐ฒ๐) Exploring different ways of seeing with our eyes and our imagination. Using Barbara Dilleyโs 5 eye practices as a springboard for the journey to expand our ways of perceiving so we have more choices in our dancing. ๐ฆ๐ผ๐๐ฟ๐ฐ๐ฒ (๐ฐ๐ฟ๐ผ๐๐ป) Navigating the head as a limb to find ease in aligning vertically as well as moving through spherical space. Integrating all parts of the body, mind and spirit so that the life force flows freely. Letting go of ego control and letting in Universal guidance by opening up the crown of the head to deep listening to the unknown.

A Common Space
Contact Improvisation & Performance Laboratory
This laboratory is an experimental space to research our physical presence, the interaction between us, and it sets an open question into the metaphysical.

Aalia organized the all class in a very structured way, breaking down the basics to better understand them. I finished the workshop with more tools who have been quite essential in my CI dancer path." - Sofia, Contact Teacher, Portugal ๐ "Transformational. More than just contact skills. I wanted to come for a year and I'm so glad I finally made it I realized in this workshop, my soul is a dancer." - Alonya, Ukraine ๐ "Seriously, super grateful for the knowledge shared by Aalia @facesofci that continues unfolding with each and every practice, drawing me more into Contact." - Dmitri, Ukraine ๐ "I feel safe, soft, yet grounded and structured. Thank you for holding this safe space. This day was really nourishing - I feel full. I've been coming to jams and can already get into flowy feminine state. But I want more structure, more skills. I knew there was more, and this is what I'm here to learn." - Olga, Russia ๐ "I have hard-core yoga asana and martial arts background already, but I have this story "I can't dance". I want to get through that and explore my body in relationship to others." - Jess, USA ๐ "I was afraid of touch and I overcame that. You made me and everyone feel safe." - Elisa, Italy ๐ "I feel this was the most essential workshop of the festival. Pure contact. Steve Paxton. No strange things. " - Geraldine, Contact Teacher, Columbia

Spine Flow
Improvisations around "Material for the Spine" with Daniel Rojasanta
Train the mobility of the human skeleton’s axis and its interconnectivity. Explore the biomechanics and practical functioning of the spine in coordination with the rest of the body.
SPINE FLOW Improvisations around Material for the Spine is an Intensive Workshop, that has toured in the last years in China, Thailand, Japan, Colombia, Russia and the US, in cities like Shanghai, Tokyo, Bogota, Moscow and New York. This workshop offers an introduction to the basic principles of Material for the Spine, to develop a smoother engagement of the spine, and it proposes ways to apply this material in group, in an improvisational setting. Dates: 18, 19, 20, 21 February Times: 17:30 - 21:30 Location: Near Chaloklum (details upon registration) SPINE FLOW offers somatic exercises and movement techniques that are very useful to train the mobility of the human skeletonโs axis, and its interconnectivity. It proposes concrete shapes and sequences to explore the biomechanics and practical functioning of the spine in coordination with the rest of the body, specially the limbs and the head. This workshop researches the Material for the Spine solo exercises, focused on the functioning of the musculoskeletal system and its inner sensations, and proposes new ways to apply them in a duo practice. Itโs an opportunity to investigate how our body moves, how our anatomy works, interacting with inner and outer forces, training how to cooperate in movement, with other people and the environment, and how to embody principles of stability, softness, strength, adaptability and grounding. SPINE FLOW offers a space to investigate and embrace the movement of our body, in the broader arena of Improvisational Dance & Contact Improvisation, proposing a balance of Somatics, Technique and Playfulness.

The Roots of the Practice
Classes with Alessandro Rivellino to warm up the Soul
What are the bases of this practice named Contact Improvisation? What works for me to take a step aside in order to dance and life forces be able to show its entanglement?
Gravity, how to embody this force? It relates with falling-flying, with yielding, with parasympathetic systems, with weight, direction, piezelectric muscular system and skeleton system? Momentum, how I join gravity and let it empower my movement? Listening, can i tune with other and have same mind, or attention, for a moment? Body, what a body can? Time, is that thing we measure with a clock? Or instead, it is rhythm, pulsation, movement, perception? Space, where it begins and where it ends? Where is the sound I listen? With this, and the mystery, with attention and what is behind it. Through myself and others and the environment, can i empower the presence by landing my attention with it? Do I dance or am I danced? Does it matter? ... And then... How to open the field for dance to teach us and take us, with trust and safety, into the unknown? Let's keep these questions alive at this intensive, and enjoy our process in between past and future. . . . 15, 16 February 2025 10 am to 1pm Contribution: 2330 BHAT Limited spots : ) registration: datosdebackup1234567@gmail.com BIO My name is Alessandro Rivellino, to recognize myself as this name would be too limiting or not enough. I will be in the role of teaching, so I know that I have a response ability to share and hold space for others to learn. I believe in what I do, which means that I do something inspired by something else with no name for it. You are welcome, as you are, with whatever is happening in what you could call yourself, today. That said, I will go for what I mean (making mine the words of a master of words): "Listen to me, listen to my silence. What I never say is the thing that I do say and also another thing. Grasp that other thing which I really said, because I myself cannot." (Clarice Lispector) ๐๐ฉต . . . . . . . . . Well, if you have time and wish to continue reading: It is already 20 years that I have worked with this thing of writing a Bio... I think the most significant ones was those who made clear that is not about myself, exactly. I keep asking and forgetting. What should I say there? That I wish to be human enough to be able to listen to the others? That I am interested in the lifts of the corners of the mouth? That I dance and teach, and I am danced and I serve as a vessel, that I trust in something that could be called the Big Mystery? Or... That I have experienced enough to start with not knowing with certain quality? That I had wonderful teachers and colleagues with whom I learnt? And that I devote my life for teaching and dancing? That I have awards and nominations, a master's degree, that I have thought in more than 30 countries for hundreds of people? That I have studied a bit of: BMC, Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, Antigimnastics, Craneosacral Osteopathy, modern dance, contemporary dance, choreography, performance studies, sitespecific, Authentic Movement, zen buddhism, ancient technologies of the sacred; and a lot of Contact Improvisation? That the most significant experiences in life I just cannot write over here? Or... That I believe in something called friendship? That I don't have kids, so I know nothing about life yet? That I am passionate now as I was when I first got in touch with dance in this life? That I still write but I listen to what is beyond, before, and behind words? Or even... That I really hope that through this illusion of you and I being separated, we can drop it, and go beyond our hanging names to explore the in-between field of existence to dance and be danced with and through the visible and invisible forces entangled at each single moment and find the way to be at the arch of beauty? Or instead, maybe I could simplify and say: "The dance is the teacher, the teacher points to that" ? (Steve Paxton) . . : )

Composing Lightness
Axis Syllabus - Somatics - CI with Kira Kirsch
A 10 Day Dance Workshop weaving The Axis Syllabus, Somatics and Contact Improvisationโ.
The Axis Syllabus offers a somatic approach to movement, blending dance techniques with a rich collection of knowledge about the body. It invites us to move and think through anatomical relationships, physics, bio-tensegrity, and ongoing multi-disciplinary research. In an Axis Syllabus class, we cultivate a collaborative learning environment, where personal research becomes central to the practice. In this workshop, we begin by deepening into the element of water reaching into various body systems as well as into physics to discover and stimulate the fluid nature of the physical, energetic and feeling body. We explore the body's materialities, anatomical relationships, and sensory experiences through various entries. One approach to soften the body is a principle called โsequencing", which involves moving the body in parts, first larger parts and then smaller and smaller increments, playing with and accessing energy within the elastic spectrum of muscles and connective tissue. Sequential movement principles allow for less inertial resistance and promote tonal changes in neuromuscular activity. It gently stretches soft tissues and enhances perception of oneself and of dynamic processes in a gradual and gentle manner. Another important part is the practice of listening with, inspire direction and transform through touch into all states of matter be it solid, liquid or gas. We further play with fluid dynamics through space and experiment with rhythm to expand our dances into more dimensions. We will move between the solo body and contact improvisation research. My curiosity is to re-search the question. โWhat prepares us for the unknown?, so that we seek out the unknown and to dance with presence and wonder. Dancing in the mornings for 3 hours and engaging in 2-hour lab sessions every second afternoon, this workshop offers a rhythm that balances structured learning with personal exploration. Join us for an immersive experience that bridges somatic inquiry, movement principles, and contact improvisation. Freedom & Form
Aikido principles into Contact with Christina Dohr
Freedom within form, and form within freedom. When we dance at this intersection, new possibilities in how we move, relate, and express ourselves emerge — both on the dance floor and in life.
Christina weaves components of Aikido into the flow of Contact Improvisation. There will be elements of floor work and understanding how the ground can be a friend, how to release weight without edging or being heavy. We will also look at principles of non-resistance and flowing with forces inspired by both Aikido and contact that will allow for dynamic and effortless movement. And combining the grounded connection with flow to open up space for creative compositional work in groups and with space. Christina is a certified embodiment facilitator and coach with a passion for blending movement and psychology. She co-leads a coaching certification program, teaching somatic techniques to hundreds of aspiring coaches. With a black belt in Aikido under 6th Dan Patrick Cassidy, her martial arts background has profoundly shaped her approach to life, relationships, and conflict, offering deep insights into self-awareness and connection. She discovered contact improvisation 10 years ago and over the last few years has started to share classes and workshops worldwide. She often brings a lens of embodiment or infuses the dance with her Aikido or psychosomatic background. from SMALL dance to WILD flight
8-Day CI Workshop with Artem Markov
This workshop brings insights from somatic approaches like the human embryonic development and the power of imagination.
How to be lighter in dance; how to maintain movement, and not freeze; how to be steady while dancing; how to find resolution and joy from own strength? In contact improvisation, we are accustomed to playing with the fall of the central axis, which is called the small dance. The fall of the vertical axis is one of the main tools that initiates movement in space. In somatic approaches based on BMC (Body-Mind Centering), we utilize the material of human embryonic development to see how new forms and new possibilities of movement are nurtured within us. I invite you to dive into profound method of embryological bodywork and find your own deeph. We will also learn from imagination qualities for flying. Additionally, you will study to recognize movement directions, the vector of movement. Birds can soar on air currents, surfers glide on the waves of ocean movement. You will learn to distinguish the directions of movement in order to surrender to the flow and not argue with physical forces. Come to improve your dance skills. About Artem Markov Artem has been engaged in Contemporary dance field since 2002. He worked as a dancer in Ufa (Russia) in performance group โWhite Labelโ 2004-2006. From 2006, he started dancing contact improvisation. He has been teaching CI since 2008. Artem is contact teacher he taught in many festivals such as: Dancefulness: Ukraine Festival of Contact Improvisation (2013), Ibiza Contact Festival (2015), Italy Contact Festival (2017, 2024), Israel Contact Festival (2019). In parallel, Artem has been engaged in body-work and movement therapy since 2006. He had started to participate somatic workshops and finally he decided to learn somatic professionally. Moving me, Moving You
Axis Syllabus into Contact with Zuzanna Bukowski
In the workshop we will dive into the world of researching our own movement patterns and breaking those. We will focus on different CI principles using the lens of the Axis Syllabus to refine our movements and create more potentiality in our moving structures.
Exploring those alone, in specific patterns and partner work shall deepen the understanding of the concepts. We will dive deeper into the concepts of landing pads, tensegrity and how our bones are moving in the body. Asking questions like: How can meeting the floor be a soft experience? How can biodynamics make our moves smooth and strong at the same time? And how can we keep our own flow while moving with someone else? We will jump, roll, research, soften, listen to good music and have fun with great music. Weโll also incorporate choreographic patterns to smoothly transition into solo movement, ensuring a mix of learning and fun throughout the workshop. As an evolving reference system for human movement the Axis Syllabus offers many ways to look onto forms of movement. Physical inquiry and research through movement combined with scientific findings form this study of human movement. The Axis Syllabus can be looked at as a lens to raise the potentiality of your own movement. For the practice of contact improvisation the Axis Syllabus can provide a softening of the movement with partners. It can help to get into and out of the floor together with a greater flow and improve the organization of one's own body to be in contact with one another. There is so many definitions of contact improvisation and also it is kind of states that there is not one which captures what it is. I want to share what Ray Chung said Contact improvisation is for as I resonate with his description a lot ๐ "Contact Improvisation is an open-ended exploration of the kinaesthetic possibilities of bodies moving through contact. Sometimes wild and athletic, sometimes quiet and meditative, it is a form open to all bodies and enquiring minds." Zuzanna has been deepening her embodiment practice under influence of various international contact improvisation and contemporary dance teachers. She is deeply interested in applying movement principles highlighted by the Axis Syllabus into the practice of contact improvisation, as well as the Underscore structure. Zuzanna started dance at the age of 4 and continued her embodiment practices through martial arts, ballet, yoga, modern dance, and Axis Syllabus. She is passionate about the impact of connection between body and mind which she continues to discover through her work in coaching, IT, and dance. Teaching dance, co-organizing the Thailand Contact & Movement Arts Festival, Warsaw CI Flow Festival and working as an IT Consultant gives her the balance between headspace and movement art.
